Troy University’s Rosa Parks Museum will host its 10th annual Juneteenth celebration on Saturday, June 14, featuring live performances throughout the day, local vendors, children’s activities and free admission to the museum and Children’s Wing.
The free event will take place in the 200 block of Montgomery Street, which runs in front of the museum, and will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Observed annually on June 19, Juneteenth is the oldest known commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States, commemorating the date in 1865 when Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger and his troops landed at Galveston Texas with the news that the Civil War had ended and the enslaved were free. In 2021, then-President Joe Biden signed legislation declaring Juneteenth as a federal holiday. On May 9, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey signed House Bill 165 into law, marking Juneteenth as an annual state holiday.
“The Rosa Parks Museum is excited for our tenth annual Juneteenth celebration,” said Donna Beisel, the museum’s director of operations. “We welcome all to come out and enjoy this time of celebration and commemoration.”
Comedienne Joy will emcee the event with music provided by DJ at Large. The day will feature live music from local talent such as Trini Spackman and Anthony Ezell, Different Flavors of Dance (DFOD), Timikel Sharpe, Ava Keith, Taj Jordan, Walt Lyon, and Tavon Rampersant. Headlining the live performances will be the group 3rd Generation Band, who will perform at 3 p.m. The 3rd Generation Band spans the spectrum of R&B’s rich history, from the hit-makers of yesteryear like Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin, to today’s hit artists such as Black-Eyed Peas, Akon and John Legend.
Participants will also have the opportunity to board an authentic 1950s Montgomery city bus and 1960s Greyhound bus throughout the day.
A financial literacy workshop with a question-and-answer session presented by SmartBank will be held in the Museum’s Auditorium at 1 p.m.
