URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Juneteenth is coming up this week and one community in Champaign County wanted to kick things off early.

This holiday, celebrated on Wednesday, recognizes the end of slavery in the United States.

The Urbana Park District and others partied at Crystal Lake Park Sunday afternoon. Families enjoyed crafts, food and music.

Organizers say this is a way for the community to get together and learn about the holiday.

“It’s important to celebrate this day, the abolishment of slavery and the Urbana Park District is a “You Belong Here” agency.” Urbana Park District outreach and wellness manager Jameel Jones said. “We want everyone to feel welcome. And this is the perfect type of event to make sure that people feel that we’re sincere in our efforts. And we want everybody to be out here with us and enjoy the day.”

Urbana Mayor Diane Marlin proclaimed June 16 as Urbana Juneteenth Day.
