Vendors and exhibitors who were hoping for more time to submit their application for Vallejo’s 35th Juneteenth Parade and Festival will now get their wish as organizers have extended the application deadline to May 31.
The festival will be held on Saturday, June 21 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Barbara Kondylis Waterfront Green, 301 Mare Island Way. The festival will be preceded by a parade at 9 a.m., starting at Tennessee Street and Broadway to Sonoma Boulevard, then to Virginia Street ending at Sacramento Street.
“Vallejo Juneteenth continues to be one of the most popular cultural events in the city and we’re expecting a great time for everyone” said African American Family Reunion Committee President Don Jordan, in a news release. “We’re grateful for the support we’re receiving from local business owners, organizations, Community Partners and corporate sponsors because the festival wouldn’t be possible without them.”
Organizers say although the pandemic is no longer a significant threat to the public, the uncertainty of today’s economy is posing a new challenge for businesses that depend on customers to help them stay in business.
The application is available online at vallejojuneteenth.com. Food vendors should contact the committee before completing an application. Parade entry applications are due June 2 and there is no fee to participate. Community Partner and sponsorship opportunities are also available.
Bay Area promoter Frazier Trager Presents will line up the entertainment program featuring an array of artists and genres performing a blend of soul, R&B, funk, soul, blues, folk, and country-rock from performers such as Tony Lindsay and the Soul Soldiers, Oakland Rising, and Hands on Fire. Gospel performances and other entertainment is also planned for the event.
The festival is a historical recognition of freedom from slavery in the United States when slaves in Galveston, Texas, received word of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1865. Events are held across the nation and in other countries, typically on the third Saturday in June.
