WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Several volunteers gathered at Maides Cemetery for a cleanup event held in honor of Juneteenth.

The Historic Wilmington Foundation hosted the “Morning of Service” event.

Maides Cemetery is a historic African-American burial ground with graves dating back to the 19th century.

Isabelle Shepherd, the interim director for the Historic Wilmington Foundation, said events like these are important for preserving our area’s history.

“Providing perpetual care to cemeteries such as Maides is a critical component in preserving and protecting our cultural landscapes,” Shepherd said. These historic sites provide spaces for reflection, for honoring those who have come before us, and they deserve our attention, especially as green spaces such as these are threatened by encroaching development.”

The Historic Wilmington Foundation hosts cleanup events at Maides Cemetery often. To learn more about volunteering opportunities and the cemetery, you can visit its website.
