Juneteenth is an holiday observed on June 19, marking the day in 1865 when federal troops entered Galveston, Texas, announcing the emancipation of enslaved people. In 2021, it became a federal holiday.

Celebrations for this community-family-based event will include live performances, Black art displays, kids’ games, and cultural food. Don’t miss the finale, which will feature fireworks. Tickets start at $7.50.
The Inaugural Parade | Sunday, June 16 | 3 p.m. | Montague Avenue
This parade will travel Montague Avenue through Liberty Hill and end at the CVS Pharmacy. The celebration will continue at the Felix Pinckney Center.
Juneteenth with Chef Rod. Vol. III | Wednesday, June 19 | 6:30-8 p.m. | Edmund’s Oast, 1081 Morrison Dr.
Celebrate freedom and community through food. Chef Rod will serve up dishes while sharing the history behind Juneteenth. Menu items include a pork belly “sammich,” jerk-style short ribs, and Charleston chewy ice cream. Pro tip: Seating is limited, so grab your spot — tickets are $55.
Maroon Walk | Thursday, June 20 | Times vary | Locations vary
This year’s self-guided walks showcase eight locations on campus that display the history of African-descended people in Charleston + honor the African American settlements established by fugitive slaves. Participants are encouraged to pick up mini flags from the Office of Institutional Diversity and to place them as they visit each location.

This family-friendly block party will celebrate the announcement of the MOJA Arts Festival’s 40th anniversary season and include outdoor dining, live music, dancing, and artisans and crafts vendors.
