SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Celebrating the rich history, culture, and achievements of the Black community was the focus in Springfield Friday night.

On Friday evening the ‘Juneteenth Jubilee Planning Committee’ hosted their annual block party outside of Level 5 restaurant. The gathering commemorates Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day. It also served as a reminder of the nation’s journey toward equality and freedom for all.

“We’re striving for excellence and we’re striving for equality, and we’re striving to be at the table,” expressed Angela Thorpe, a Volunteer Coordinator for the Juneteenth Jubilee Planning Committee. “And not just be at the table, but make decisions for what is happening around our neighborhoods and in our community.”

The celebrations will continue into the weekend where the organization will host their “Family Fun Day.” It will take place at Blunt Park in Springfield from noon until 7 p.m.
