Wednesday, June 19, represents Juneteenth—a federal holiday dedicated to commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. Those in Chico wasted no time recognizing the holiday of liberation.

At noon on Wednesday, the Building Leaders, Advocates and Community Connections (BLACC) group kicked off their second annual Juneteenth celebration. Dozens of people gathered at DeGarmo Park for the celebration. The community event had many things to offer including a variety of food, vendors, and booths from local and black-owned businesses.

KRCR spoke with one Chico-based small business owner, founder, and Creative Director of Able Abe Marc Johnson. “Sharing an opportunity to help local businesses grow and prosper is something that all communities should be about,” Johnson said.

Along with booths were performances, exhibits and keynote speaker, Chico State Professor and Author, Dr. Nandi Crosby who highlighted the holiday’s importance. The BLACC group says they hope to continue the Juneteenth celebration for many years to come.
