MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) – Members of the Myrtle Beach community came out over the weekend to celebrate Juneteenth and the day’s significance.
Juneteenth is a federal holiday that commemorates the freedom of slaves in the United States. It celebrates the day the last slaves were informed they were free in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865.
The Neighborhood Services Department hosted a Juneteenth Parade on Saturday which went down North Oak Street, Mr. Joe White Avenue and ended at Carver Street and 18th Avenue North.
Following the parade, a Juneteenth Celebration was held at Charlie’s Place. The event featured an Afrocentric fashion show, food vendors, craft vendors and live performances by several groups including the Myrtle Beach Middle School Dance Team and the Gold and Furry Drumline.
