FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) – On June 15, The Greater Fairbanks Branch of NAACP is hosting their annual Juneteenth celebration.

The free event will be held at Bernice Allridge Park from noon to 4 p.m. with 40 vendors, including food and entertainment.

There will be food served at 12:30 p.m. followed by a performance from the Pavva Inupiaq dancers at 1 p.m. along with door prize drawings and much more.

Juneteenth Coordinator, Rev. Carlene Tillery says, “We could not do this without the generosity of the Fairbanks community and businesses who have donated door prizes and helped us buy food to feed our guests. As a community, it is important that we reflect on how far we’ve come and collaborate on where we plan to go. We are all in this community together. Juneteenth is an opportunity for us to celebrate our differences and acknowledge our similarities.”

Juneteenth is celebrated annually on June 19, to commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States. Formally known as Emancipation Day, Freedom Day or Jubilee Day, it is a celebration of freedom, culture, and resilience for the African American community.
