
Park Forest, IL—(ENEWSPF)—June is Juneteenth, Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, and Pride Month. The Park Forest Public Library has activities that recognize these important events and more.

Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month
The library is offering three events in June for Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month.
Over seven million Americans are currently living with some degree of Alzheimer’s. On June 5 at 11 a.m., Phillip Bennet of the Alzheimer’s Association discusses the ten warning signs of the disease. This informative session will help participants identify signs in themselves or others. Registration is encouraged, and it opens May 29. Light refreshments will be served.
Judy Phillips from the RUSH Alzheimer’s Disease Center will present the latest information on the disease, its warning signs, and treatment on Monday, June 16, at 11 a.m. Registration is encouraged and opens June 9.
The third presentation features author Patricia McClure-Chessier on Monday, June 30, at 11 a.m. She shares her journey of caring for her mother, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease, and how to deal with the associated challenges. McClure-Chessier is the author of two books: “Losing a Hero to Alzheimer’s: The Story of Pearl” and “A Caregiver’s Guide for Alzheimer’s and Dementia: Nine Key Principles.”

Juneteenth Celebration
The library will not open on June 19 in observance of Juneteenth. Patrons can celebrate a couple of days early on Tuesday, June 17. At 4 p.m., poetic storyteller Oba William King will present an interactive musical and spoken word performance highlighting the history of Juneteenth.
Registration is open. Organizers appreciate participants signing up.
Beginning Monday, June 16, the library is sponsoring a Juneteenth Senior Giveaway. Dedicated to celebrating and understanding Juneteenth, older people can stop in for their gift. There are limited supplies. Registration will open on June 9.

Pride Month Activities
June is also Pride Month, and the Park Forest Public Library has two events to help celebrate.
The first, on Saturday, June 14, from 12 to 2 p.m., is the Tie Dye & Ice Cream Truck Palooza. This event is open to all ages, and it has a dye station and an ice cream truck on hand. A limited number of free t-shirts are available. Participants are welcome to bring their own items.
Registration is now open. Organizers ask participants to sign up.
The second event, Tye Dye Pride for teens, will be on Monday, June 30, at 4 p.m.. Plain white bandanas will be provided, and participants can bring one additional item to dye. The event will be outdoors, weather permitting.

Native American Women in Illinois History
On Tuesday, June 3, at 5:30 p.m., Kim Sigafus will present a history of natives in Illinois with a focus on native women, considered “The Hidden Half.” She will discuss Blackhawk’s wife, “Singing Bird,” and the day-to-day lives of the women, including courting, marriage, and child-rearing.

Cookout Cuisine with Susan Maddox
Chef Susan Maddox returns to the library on Saturday, June 28, at 1 p.m. for an in-person demonstration of “Cookout Cuisine & Sauces.” Registration for this event is necessary and opens on June 21.

Summer Reading Kick-Off with Animal Quest
The library kicks off its summer reading program on Saturday, June 7. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., representatives from Animal Quest present an interactive and educational program, followed by a petting zoo open to the whole family.

The library at 400 Lakewood Boulevard is open for all services from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday. However, it will not open on Thursday, June 19, in honor of Juneteenth.
