Juneteenth was celebrated in the Quad Cities on Saturday with a festival in downtown Davenport. The all-day event had multiple vendors, food and music while also remembering the historical background of the day. The actual holiday is June 19.
The event was expected to be attended by over 500 people, and 60 vendors brought their products to share with attendees. While the event was mostly geared towards celebrating Juneteenth, the organizers also wanted to shine a light on the significance of the day.
“It’s very important that we recognize the holiday, that we understand the history of why it happened and that we engage in activities that can continue to respect that,” Tracy Singleton, festival organizer, said.
The organizers hope to grow the number of vendors that participate in this annual event and facilitate a stronger connection between Black owned businesses in the Quad Cities area.
