Pocahontas, Ark. (KAIT) – The city of Pocahontas is set to celebrate Juneteenth this weekend with an event that’s grown in popularity over the past few years.

This year, however, there’s an exciting new twist.

The Eddie Mae Herron Center has traditionally hosted the Juneteenth event, but this year, the Historic Downtown Network of Pocahontas is partnering with the Eddie Mae Herron Center to combine “Summer on the Square” and Juneteenth to enhance the celebration and increase exposure for the cause.

“I think it sets a good and positive precedent,” said Andrew Knatcal, a board member of the Downtown Historic Network of Pocahontas. “You know the theme. As far as the theme goes, what Juneteenth is, what it represents. That someone would be willing to join up and help that cause grow.”

Attendees can look forward to a variety of activities including over 50 retail and craft booths, six food trucks, a car show with over 80 cars, a cornhole tournament, and a BBQ cookoff.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 15, with events starting at various times.

Off-duty police officers will also be present.

The combined efforts of the Eddie Mae Herron Center and the Historic Downtown Network aim to make this year’s Juneteenth celebration the biggest and most impactful yet.
