Several activities are planned for Red Wing’s third annual Juneteenth celebration on Wednesday, June 19.
Juneteenth commemorates the day when the last slaves were freed by the Union Army on June 19, 1865. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021.
The Black Student Union at Red Wing High School, along with community members, organized this year’s Juneteenth celebration.
The June 19 event begins with a basketball tournament at 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Red Wing YMCA.
A historical and special landmark walk will take place at 1-2:30 p.m. beginning at Central Park.
The community can enjoy music and food, check out vendors and visit resource booths at 3-7 p.m. in Central Park. Musician Timothy Brown will headline the music at the event.
Everyone is welcome to attend the celebration.
