QUINCY (WGEM) – As Juneteenth celebrations wrap up this weekend, local singers, songwriters and musicians came together on Sunday afternoon for a concert at the Bethel Assembly of God to commemorate the federal holiday.
Attendees had the chance to hear a mix of modern and 80′s gospel music.
The choir sang a few original compositions, including local artist Koretta Sykes, who wrote and performed her original song “Nearer.”
“We didn’t come here to entertain you,” Sykes said. “We came to pray with everything we have.”
Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021. The holiday is also called Freedom Day.
