MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) -The Temple Theater hosted a unique Juneteenth celebration, drawing members from the community and the surrounding area. The festivities, which spanned the entire weekend, were a testament to the significance of this historical event, even though the official day was yet to come on the 19th.

Keith Davis, Randy Wayne, and other talented individuals came together to showcase a play that is truly one to remember.

”This play takes you through a whirlwind of emotions. It talks about the day that we, the last slaves, finally became free, which is very important for us to know and like. And like most people say, it sounds kind of cliche, but it’s very accurate. To progress in the future, you have to know where you come from. You have to know your history. It is very important for people to come out to this play so they can be entertained, be inspired, and be educated at the same time,” says Randy Wayne, Play Writer for Freedom Day.

Once the play was written, Keith Davis was inspired by the creativity and Wayne’s writing skills to help deliver such a beautiful outcome.

”He came to me about leading the project. The actual production of it inspired me because the play has been done twice before, but I wanted to find different ways to emphasize certain moments in the show. One thing that really stuck out to me in this show was the concept of family. The family dynamics shown in this play, the love, the fights, all of those little moments I really wanted to hone in on so that the audience can relate to it,” says Director of Freedom Day, Keith Davis.

Members of the play say they enjoy participating every year.
