YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Juneteenth celebrations continued today in downtown Youngstown as part of the city’s weeklong festivities.
Saturday afternoon, it was for the children with the Juneteenth Youth Day at Wean Park.
The festivities included several family fun events, activities and giveaways, with a flag football tournament, cheerleading terms and a youth entertainment showcase.
Joseph Napier of the Juneteenth Committee said the celebration was about enjoying the day while keeping the story of Juneteenth alive.
“A lot of times, we want to point to the historical things always, but today is just about joy — seeing the smiles on kids faces, seeing parents being able to see their kids having fun and grandparents come out as well. So, it’s a fully family affair,” Napier said.
The city’s festivities continue tomorrow at Wean park with the Youngstown Soul Food Cook-Off from 1:30 to 5 p.m.
