COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Juneteenth flag will be flown at the Ohio Statehouse this year.
A press release from Senate Assistant Minority Leader Hearcel Craig, D-Columbus, confirmed that the flag was added to the list of those allowed at the Statehouse.
“This is a monumental moment to commemorate and pay tribute to the struggles and sacrifices African Americans have endured in the United States,” Craig said in the release. “The flying of this flag at our state capitol will remind Ohioans of the legislature’s continued fight to eradicate systemic racism in Ohio. This is another step forward to secure racial equity and justice for all within our state.”
Juneteenth is celebrated on June 19, recognizing the end of slavery in the United States. According to the National Museum of African American History & Culture, enslaved African Americans in Texas were freed by Union troops on June 19, 1865.
This was two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln.
“Juneteenth…commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in confederate states,” the release from Craig’s office reads. “Juneteenth is also a celebration of the heritage, culture, and extraordinary achievements of Black Americans in every field of human endeavor.”
