HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – People came together a few days early to kick off Juneteenth on Saturday in Huntsville.

Every June 19, the federal holiday commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Lakeside United Methodist Church hosted a Juneteenth celebration with a heavy focus on education and a variety of vendors.

Jacqueline Martin, the Juneteenth Chairperson, said the annual celebration is a good opportunity to be educated and engage in the community.

“It’s a multicultural event that I think is essential for us to understand that we are all here together and that we are joined in some ways,” Martin said. “I think it’s always good for us to learn more about one another so we appreciate exactly who we are and what we have to offer this country.”

The celebration had something for everyone with a petting zoo and a bee-keeper exhibit.

Celebrations will continue throughout north Alabama in the next several days.
