The United States Exercise Tiger Foundation is set to honor Black veterans and those who died in conflict Wednesday as part of the Juneteenth holiday.

The organization plans to lay two wreaths at the Boone County War Memorial Plaza at the Boone County Courthouse at 9:30 a.m.

The larger 5 foot wreath is meant to recognize Black veterans and those who died in wars and conflicts across Missouri and the country.

The second wreath is meant to honor Tuskegee Airman and USTF board member Sgt. James Shipley. The Tuskegee Airmen are a famed group of Black pilots and airmen who served during World War 2.

The program also includes two Black veterans, a retired 25 year US Coast Guardsman Petty Officer Dave Sheley and Fmr. US Army Sgt. Shirley Bishop, who will take part in the short honors.

Boone Commissioner Justin Aldred is also expected to take part.

USTF Director Susan Haines praised what she says is a historic opportunity to recognize those who have served the country.

“This may be the only honors of its type in Missouri tomorrow. At the USTF everyday is veterans day, but on Juneteenth, to recognize our Black veterans and warriors is something that…we need to do.”

“Our black men and women have served valiantly through our history, but they like the ‘Battle of Exercise Tiger’ are often overlooked as well” she added.

According to the USTF, medals named in honor of Sgt. Shipley will also be given out to combat veterans or their families.

The US Navy Bell, will be rung 19 times to honor the day following the wreath and flower laying.

The event is free and open to the public.
