Some new aspects this year are:

  • Cultural performances featuring vibrant artistic expressions.
  • Basketball hoops competition featuring youth, adults and local celebrities.
  • Free health testing (diabetes, cardiovascular, and kidney testing) for all interested adults at the event.

“Juneteenth is a time to reflect, celebrate, and come together in unity,” Walé Elegbede, president of the Rochester branch of the NAACP, said in a statement announcing the event. “Juneteenth is a day to honor the emancipation of slavery back in 1865. It represents the enduring fight for freedom and justice, and it’s a powerful reminder of how far we’ve come — and yet how far we still must go. Join us, be in community with one another and dedicate ourselves anew to freedom and justice.”

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
