Sandy Springs gears up to celebrate Juneteenth with a cultural event on June 19 at City Springs from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event, free and open to the public, promises educational experiences, live performances, and art exhibitions to honor the significance of Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Featured activities include a dance production titled “IMANI” by Namari Dance Center, a digital art exhibition facilitated by LIQUID Arts & Productions, and interactive outdoor activities like a scavenger hunt and a genealogical research exhibit.
At the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center’s Byers Theatre, the audience will be treated to “IMANI” — which means faith in Swahili. According to the City of Sandy Springs, the performers will tell a story of how faith sustained enslaved Africans through their journey from bondage to emancipation. The event also boasts a range of other activities, including a local eighth grade and high school student digital art exhibition, that provides an immersive experience using digital and augmented reality technologies.
Outdoor festivities on City Green will feature a variety of interactive and educational experiences. Locals can participate in a new Juneteenth Scavenger Hunt or engage with history through a Genealogical Research Exhibit, reported the City of Sandy Springs. Additionally, a West African Community Drum Circle invites all to contribute their own rhythms in a collective musical celebration of freedom and culture.
The evening’s lineup is both a look back in honor of those who fought for justice and a step forward as a united community. From food trucks and vendor stalls to arts, crafts, and games, the celebration is tailored for attendees of all ages. Performers like Namari Dance and partners such as the Fulton County Public Library will enrich the occasion with their contributions. While celebrating heritage and progress, the event simultaneously creates a space for remembrance, celebration, and reflection.
Collaboration is at the heart of this years’ Juneteenth Celebration in Sandy Springs, with various organizations and communities coming together. Sponsors including Asbury Automotive and Inspire Brands, and partners like the City of Brookhaven and City of Dunwoody, are joining forces. This communal effort speaks to the united front required not only to acknowledge the past but also to craft a future of peace and harmony.
