Walker County will now celebrate June 19 as a holiday in honor of the day in 1865 when soldiers arrived in Texas, the western-most of the Confederate states during the Civil War, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation.

The new holiday was added to the county calendar at the Board of Commissioners’ Jan. 9 meeting.
