FARRELL, Pa. (WKBN) — Juneteenth celebrations are underway in the Valley.
Residents of Farrell gathered at the Veterans Square to honor the ending of slavery on June 19, 1865.
The celebration included a parade along with many food vendors, a band and a live D.J.
One vendor says for them, it’s their version of the 4th of July.
It’s important to her to celebrate because it’s part of her culture.
“We weren’t always free. Our ancestors, they weren’t always free, so it’s important to acknowledge, recognize and celebrate,” Tisa Harris of T & K Barbeque said.
Harris also says Juneteenth should be recognized by every state government.
