DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) – The bill to make Juneteenth a state holiday in Alabama is one step closer to passing as it has successfully advanced through the House.
District 85 Representative Rick Rehm (R-Dothan) led the charge for House Bill 165.
The bill aims to make the commemoration of when African American slaves learned of their emancipation in 1865 a state holiday.
Similar efforts were attempted last session.
Now, the bill heads to the state Senate, where it must get the votes before heading to the desk of Governor Kay Ivey to be signed.
Rehm, who spoke to News4 last month about the bill, said its passage would mean a lot to many.
