EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – In Henderson, one neighborhood held its own Juneteenth celebration on Saturday.
This is the first time the city has had a neighborhood-level event in addition to the main city celebration, which was last weekend.
City Commissioner Robert Pruitt planned the event, and says he wants to see more neighborhood festivals and parties like there was when he was growing up.
Saturday’s event had food vendors, a raffle and a foam play area for kids.
Pruitt says it means a lot to him to see how people were eager to participate in the event.
”Every neighborhood should have its own identity,” said Pruitt. “As far as whatever your culture is, I think you should put it out there and let everybody enjoy it, and one for all and all for one. No one is better than any other, everyone enjoy each other, and that’s what I’ve been working on for the last 40 years.”
The event had a cornhole competition, which included teams from city departments, like the police and fire departments.
Commissioner Pruitt says he plans for the block party to be an annual event, and he says he’s planning big surprises for future years.
